Entering the living mining laboratory

With global and local expansion plans, and a recent agreement with Glencore under its belt, the NORCAT centre in Ontario, Canada, is ready to welcome more miners investing in emerging technologies

NORCAT bills itself as a specialist in skilled labour training, as well as a global "one-stop shop" for mining technology and innovation.

The NORCAT Underground Centre, an operating mine that's located at its headquarters in Sudbury, forms the unique perch from which the organisation says it can keep an eye on emerging trends and new technologies within the industry.

"NORCAT is quite unique in the world," says NORCAT CEO Don Duval. "We're the only innovation centre that owns an operating mine that is fundamentally focused on enabling start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises, international companies etc, to develop, test and demonstrate emerging technologies they believe are poised to transform the global mining industry."
