Kallipr, Intel, and NORCAT Partner to Drive Mining Innovation with Rugged IoT Solutions & Private 5G

3 March 2025 - Kallipr, a leader in rugged IoT solutions, has partnered with Intel and NORCAT to enhance underground mining operations through advanced AI, edge computing, and private 5G connectivity. This collaboration introduces real-time monitoring, automation and data-driven decision-making to one of the most demanding industrial environments.

The partnership leverages Kallipr’s IoT technology, Intel’s edge AI solutions and NORCAT’s Underground Centre – the world’s only operating mine that allows technology companies to develop, test and demonstrate emerging technologies. The solution integrates private 5G networks and AI-driven analytics for seamless, real-time visibility into critical mining conditions.

Mining operations rely on precise water pressure, environmental monitoring, and predictive analytics to ensure efficiency and safety. Kallipr’s rugged IoT devices continuously collect and transmit data, while Intel’s edge AI technology analyses trends, detects anomalies, and helps prevent issues such as leaks and pressure drops that could halt operations.

"Miners often work in unpredictable environments, where real-time data can mean the difference between smooth operations and costly downtime," said Stelios Trikoulis, CCO of Kallipr. "With our rugged IoT technology, combined with Intel’s AI and NORCAT’s mining technology expertise, we’re making underground mining smarter and safer."

The project integrates a private 5G network, provided by Rogers, ensuring seamless connectivity for IoT sensors, cameras, and AI-powered analytics tools. This allows for real-time monitoring of water pressure, flow rates, and environmental conditions - critical factors in mining operations.

"Bringing AI, IoT solutions and Private 5G to underground mining is a game-changer," said Bhupesh Agrawal, General Manager Private Networks and Enterprise AI, Intel Corp. "By collecting data via Private 5G and processing it at the edge, we enable faster decision-making, enhanced safety, and a more sustainable approach to resource management."

Through remote monitoring and automation, the system reduces the need for manual checks, minimizing risk to workers and improving response times to potential issues. Additionally, efficient water usage tracking contributes to more sustainable mining practices.

"At NORCAT, we are dedicated to supporting innovation and technology adoption in the mining industry," said Carole Charron, Manager, Operations and Technology Integration at NORCAT. "By utilizing the NORCAT Underground Centre, we provide a unique venue to showcase how IoT, AI and connectivity can revolutionize underground operations, making them safer, smarter and more sustainable."

The success of this initiative will drive further adoption of AI-powered IoT solutions across other mining sites globally. By integrating cutting-edge technology with real-world applications, Kallipr and Intel are setting a new standard for industrial automation in mining.
